Hamabe No Arashi

Frank Proto

Hamabe No Arashi is special piece commissioned for the Cincinnati Symphony's 1990 tour of Japan. The title means "Storm at the Seashore". Hamabe is based around the well-known Japanese folk song Hamabe No Uta (Song of the Seashore). UPI described the piece as one of the surprise hits of the tour....."the normally reserved Japanese audience was transformed and reacted with thunderous applause after every performance." Arashi is a lively, jazz-inspired, virtuoso-orchestra work. It's an ideal piece to open or close a concert.
