Frank Proto has won the Grand Prize in the 2006 New Orleans International Composer Competition for his new composition: Fiesta Bayou and Kismet. Sponsored by the Louisiana Philharmonic Ochestra the competition attracted entries from around the world. The first prize includes a commission for a new orchestral work to be premiered by the orchestra during the 2008/2009 season.
Fiesta Bayou and Kismet is dedicated to the Louisiana Philharmonic and Klauspeter Seibel. It is also dedicated to the city of New Orleans and its citizens. The Fiesta Bayou was initially finished on August 27, 2005 just a day before Hurricane Katrina struck. As its disastrous aftermath was being played out before the world, the composer decided to add a short musical impression - Kismet - about what was happening.
